Cold and Flu Season is Here
According to WebMD (see link below), more than 50 million people will come down with a case of the flu this season - and a billion of us will get a cold! It is no wonder that everybody has a cure - from a favorite pharmaceutical, to an old family remedy or recommending natural supplements.
We spent more than $1.5 billion on supplements to boost immunity last year to help us ward off colds and the flu. Let's face it - colds are a drag, but the flu is much worse; incapacitating your daily life for an extended time. With the flu, you not only have sinus congestion, you have fever and body aches too! So when you feel a cold or flu coming on, which natural remedies should you consider?
Let's start with Vitamin C for colds. Vitamin C seems to boost some aspects of your immune system, but may or may not prevent colds. As a treatment, Vitamin C has been shown to reduce the duration of a cold - by as much as 24-36 hours. Be careful - high doses can upset your stomach.
There are other supplements that work as a treatment, reducing the length and severity of a cold. Oscillococcinum is a traditional remedy used by Native Americans. Echinacea can help treat colds and the best species being "Echinacea Purpurea" - but is not effective in preventing you from catching a cold or flu. Zinc lozenges have become a popular treatment for the common cold. Garlic seems to stimulate the immune system.
Even with all of these natural remedies out there, an annual Flu Vaccine is recommended for most children and adults.
