January is National Blood Donation Awareness month.


According to the Red Cross, someone in the United States needs blood every two seconds.  A car accident victim can require 100 pints of blood, and that blood needs to be on the shelf before it is needed.  Many cancer patients call for blood, sometimes daily, during chemotherapy. Individuals affected by Sickle Cell Disease are compelled to have transfusions throughout their lives. To keep up with this demand, 41,000 folks need to donate every day.  A single donation can save three lives!

Not only does blood donation help others, the donor receives health benefits as well.  Research within the American Journal of Epidemiology shows that repeat blood donors are less likely to suffer heart attacks by 88%! While it hasn't been completely proven, researchers think it is because the blood flows in a way that does less damage to the lining of the blood vessels.  It is also found that blood donors have less hospitalization overall.  Donating blood also helps balance the amount of iron within your blood, which also benefits blood vessels. In addition, the patient gets a mini check-up every time they donate, which can alert them to diseases ranging from anemia to West Nile Virus. Finally, doing good and altruistic behavior has been proven to increase length of life by four years!
