A healthy brain = A healthy life

With many New Year's resolutions focusing on physical health, the strength of the mind often gets swept to the side.  Nobody can see the well-being of your brain, but everyone will feel the effects. Here are 6 key activities one must do to keep the brain in tip-top shape.
  1. Sleep. Sleep has been shown to reduce the buildup of the plaque in the brain that is associated with Alzheimer's Disease.  At least 6 hours are needed for the brain to become rested.
  2. Exercise.  Research has shown that 20 minutes of exercise 5 times a week staves off dementia, even stopping decline that has already begun.  The type of exercise does matter.  More complicated activities, such as dancing, have greater benefits that simpler ones. 
  3. Eat brain food.  There have been dozens of studies that show people who eat a typical Mediterranean diet have a reduced risk of dementia.  This diet includes plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, yogurt, cheese,  and wine.
  4. Cognitive exercise.  What is cognitive exercise?  In short, it is what many people already do for a hobby.  Learning a new language or playing an instrument have both been shown to have a great affect on brain health. 
  5. Social connections.  When we are with other people, our brain fires rapidly to keep up with conversation.  Our friends and family also help us stave off stress, as long as they are happy connections.  It has been shown that satisfaction with social connections is more important than the amount of social connections.
  6. Brain protection.  Safety is important.  Wear a helmet during certain sports and always wear your seat belt. In this case, an ounce of prevention is worth pounds of cure; there is no reversing significant brain damage.
