New Rules for Electronic Health Records

A new pact created by the Obama administration is part of the on-going effort to make electronic health records (EHR) more efficient, therefore increasing the effectiveness of patient treatment.  While the system has not been accepted universally, 46 states and over 90% of the EHR vendors have agreed to the three new terms.

Under this new agreement, patients will have more access and portability of their records.  The awkward technology that keeps patients from successfully accessing their records and moving them to different providers will be phased out.
 
There is now a fine for blocking medical records from fellow medical practitioners when the patient requests it.  Typically, the refusal to share was not intentional, but a misunderstanding of privacy laws and violations. Under this new contract, the laws are clearly stated and enforced.

The final commitment to the pact is to implement and maintain a set of nationally recognized policies and standards. This includes a universal language that will make records easier to share.

The US Health and Human Service Secretary, Sylvia Burwell, believed that these new set of rules is a great step in the right direction.  She stated, "These commitments are a major step forward in our efforts to support a health-care system that is better, smarter and results in healthier people."
