Ways to avoid ticks and Lyme Disease
 It seems preposterous that such a tiny insect could cripple a healthy human. But tick-borne Lyme Disease affects approximately 300,000 people a year. Once infected, humans can end up with severe adverse health complications, such as pain, speech problems, or memory issues. To keep away from contracting Lyme Disease, here are some basic steps to take. - Avoid tick areas. When hiking, walk in the center of trails and stay clear of tall bush or other vegetation.
- Dress wisely. If going into an area that you might get bitten by a tick, wear shoes, long pants tucked into your socks, a long-sleeved shirt, a hat and gloves.
- Use a repellent with DEET or permethrin (on clothing and gear). Repellents containing DEET can be applied to the skin and can protect up to several hours. Products that contain permethrin can be used to treat boots, clothing, and camping gear. Treated items can stay protected through several laundry cleanings.
- After being outdoors, check for ticks. Search your entire body for ticks, using a mirror to check all angles. Be sure to help children with their own tick checks.
- Check your pets for ticks. Not only can pets carry ticks into the home, they can also contract Lyme Disease themselves.
- Make your yard tick-safe. Keep vegetation away from playground equipment and regularly mow and clear tall grass from your home. Place wood chips or gravel between lawns and wooded areas to keep ticks at bay. Discourage deer, who are the main food source for ticks, by using a fence around the yard.
- If you are bit, remove it quickly and apply antiseptic to the area. If a tick is attached less than 24 hours, you have a lower chance of contracting Lyme Disease. Seek medical help if you have been bitten.
